What’s the purpose of these modules?
• BIOL1021 Modules A & B aim to provide you with the necessary chemistry
background for your future biological science studies.
• Overview of important mechanisms that play a role in biological chemistry
• Emphasis upon understanding how these reactions take place (curly
arrows!)
• Biological processes will be given as examples to illustrate the relevance of
the chemistry to your biological science studies.
How will you be expected to show your understanding of these
reactions?
• From a set of given starting materials and a product, you will be expected
to draw the curly arrow mechanism, including intermediate structures.
• From a set of given starting materials and reagents, you will be expected to
be able to draw the product which will be formed.

illustrate the principles of the lecture material.
