UNIT 3 - PLANT PHYSIOLOGY

CHAPTER 10 - PLANTS AND FOOD

Plants make starch:
● storing carbohydrate
● Insoluble
● Compact
● can be broken down easily.
Test for starch:
● A drop of iodine solution is added to the starch
● It will react forming a blue-black color
Presence of starch:
● It uses carbon dioxide from the air
● It needs light
● It needs chlorophyll in the leaves
a carbohydrate made of many sugar subunits is called
polysaccharide.
Glucose is a single sugar unit called monosaccharides.
Fructose - fruits.
Glucose formula: C₆H₁₂O₆
Photosynthesis - the chemical process which produces
glucose using light.
Equation: 6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2

, Structure and functions of leaf:
● Waxy cuticle - Protective layer prevents water from
evaporating.
● Upper epidermis - Thin and transparent to allow light to
enter, tightly packed to prevent water loss.
● Palisade mesophyll - Column shaped cells tightly
packed with chloroplast to absorb more light, used for
photosynthesis.
● Spongy mesophyll - Irregularly shaped, loosely packed
cells, less chloroplasts, gas exchange.
● Lower epidermis - Guard cells and stomata
● Stomata - Gas exchange, evaporation of water, open
during the day and closes during night, located
underside of the leaf to reduce water loss.
● Vascular bundle - Xylem and phloem to transport
substance to and from the leaf.
● Xylem - Transport water from roots to the plant.
● Phloem - Transport sucrose and amino acids around the
plant.
