Research Plan

1) State the General Research Topic
I have chosen to research into teenage pregnancy.

2) State your research question (include a Hypothesis if you have one)
How do teenage mothers perceive the level of support provided during their
pregnancy and the first year of motherhood?

3) What are the Aims and Objectives of your research? (3 sub-questions)
- How do young mothers perceive the level of support given by their immediate
family and friends?
- How do young mothers perceive the level of support provided by the welfare
system and/or other agencies?
- Do young mothers feel that they could have been supported to a greater extent?

4) What is the Rationale (reason) for your chosen topic?
I have chosen to research into teenage pregnancy because many teenage mothers’
especially do not return to education, and so if the support provided to them is
improved, the negative effects of teenage pregnancy may subside. However, without
researching this topic, improving the support offered to teenage pregnancy is not
possible.

5) What is your proposed Primary Research Method, and why is this the most
appropriate one?
I have decided that I will be using surveys as my primary research method. This is
the most appropriate method for my topic of research because I can collect
quantitative and qualitative data which means I will be able to create statistics from
my research, while also collecting more specific, personal input from participants.

6) What Secondary Research is available on the topic of your subject – carry out
a literature search and briefly list and describe your findings.
- The estimated number of conceptions to girls under 18 fell to 22,653 in 2014
compared with 24,306 in 2013, a decrease of 6.8%. (Office for National Statistics –
ONS)
