This essay will be going into the depths of what the function of research has been in regards
to teenage pregnancy. In other words, it will be the discussion of what researchers hope to
gain from the gathering of research when it comes to teenage pregnancy.



One reason that may prompt research into teenage pregnancy is to try and find out why
teenage girls are finding themselves pregnant. One possible cause of teenage girls
becoming pregnant could be the lack of sex education being provided to them. If research
has come to the conclusion that lack of sex education is a major reason why teenage girls
are getting pregnant, then this issue could then be addressed to try and reduce the number
of teenagers getting pregnant. This could mean more lessons in school about the prevention
of pregnancy, as well as using theatre in education to help make the whole scenario a bit
more realistic to the teenagers’ (both boys’ and girls’) who would be watching. Because
teenage pregnancy is not ideal and it is inconvenient for both the girl who becomes
pregnant, as well as the country itself, the country wants to reduce the numbers of teenage
pregnancies. By carrying out research into why teenage girls’ are finding themselves
pregnant, action can be taken to try and improve the numbers’. Carrying out research into
why teenagers’ are getting pregnant can be useful because if the reason for teenage
pregnancy is able to be highlighted, then professionals can try to work towards a solution.
However, not all reasons for teenage pregnancy will have a solution, and so often the
research is not worth it if they do not come closer to reducing the statistics.



Another function of research in teenage pregnancy is to try and find out how we can provide
extra care and support throughout the duration of the pregnancy as well as when the baby is
born. Having a baby is a challenge in itself – regardless of age and situation – though when
you are a teenager having a baby, the mother will require extra support and care than other
mothers’. By researching how we can provide useful support, it will be easier to help the
girls’ get themselves back into education, as it is extremely hard for teenage mothers to stay
in education while caring for their babies’, which usually results in their attendance
plummeting which leads to them underachieving in their exams. Primary research can be
conducted with teenage mothers and fathers to be able to really understand how the state
can further support and care for teenage parents. The research allows an understanding as
to how we have failed teenage parents in providing support for them in getting back to
education, as well as any other additional support they may require such as childcare which
they may be unable to afford.
