COURSE OVERVIEW


Dear Future Electronics Engineers,

In this course, you will have virtual and actual observation of physics principles. The
experiments and other activities cover measurements, motion, forces, systems in
equilibrium, and accelerated systems; fluids at rest, periodic motion, optics, and
electricity.

As a result of your educational experiences in the course ENGGPHYSL, you should
be able to:
1. Demonstrate ability to carry out scientific method by accurate data gathering
and proper evaluation of data in verifying physics principles on measurements,
one-dimensional motion; friction, Newton’s laws of motion; rigid bodies in
equilibrium; and, Archimedes’ principle.
2. Demonstrate ability to carry out scientific method by accurate data gathering
and proper evaluation of data in verifying physics principles on simple
harmonic motion, refraction and reflection of light; direct current, voltage and
resistance.
3. Demonstrate resourcefulness and creativity in presenting on-site experiment,
and alternative experiment set-up and procedure.

Your academic experience as an Engineering student will be utilized in this course.
To ensure that you will demonstrate the above cited course learning outcomes at the
end of the term, the course content is divided into the following:

MODULE 1: MEASUREMENTS – This module aims to enable you to obtain measurements
using micrometer and Vernier caliper; and, differentiate three measuring tools (ruler,
Vernier caliper and micrometer) in terms of usage, measuring procedure, resolution, and
accuracy.

MODULE 2: UNIFORMLY ACCELERATED MOTION – This module aims to enable you to
describe rectilinear motion using graphs and equations; in terms of displacement,
average and instantaneous velocity; and, average and instantaneous acceleration. This
module will also help you solve problems on rectilinear motion with constant
acceleration.

MODULE 3: STATIC AND KINETIC FRICTION – This module aims to enable you to differentiate
static and kinetic frictional forces; and to determine the magnitudes of static and kinetic

frictional forces; and, solve for the coefficient of static friction and coefficient of kinetic
friction.

MODULE 4: NEWTON’S SECOND LAW OF MOTION – This module aims to enable you to
describe the use of an Atwood Machine to demonstrate dynamic systems; solve for the
acceleration of a body or system applying Newton’ 2nd Law; and, discuss effect of pulley
inertia in an Atwood Machine and on the acceleration of a body in the system.

MODULE 5: TORQUE OR MOMENT OF A FORCE – This module aims to enable you to discuss
the conditions for rotational equilibrium of rigid bodies; apply the principles of torque and
relate the stability of a rigid body to the position of its center of gravity and its weight;
and, solve for unknown forces applying torque concepts, equations and conditions for
rotational equilibrium.

MODULE 6: SPECIFIC GRAVITY BY ARCHIMEDES’ PRINCIPLE – This module aims to enable
you to describe buoyant force; demonstrate Archimedes’ principle in the determination
of specific gravity; solve for specific gravity of solids and liquids; describe use of
hydrometer to measure specific gravity; and, apply alternative method to measure
specific gravity of a liquid other than water.

MODULE 7: SIMPLE HARMONIC MOTION – This module aims to enable you to discuss the
properties of simple harmonic motion; demonstrate a procedure in verifying the factors
affecting the period and frequency of a simple pendulum, and describe those of a
vertical spring system.

MODULE 8: REFRACTION OF LIGHT– This module aims to enable you to describe how to
determine index of refraction of a prism; demonstrate how to determine the focal length
of a convex lens; and, apply equation and ray diagram method to determine focal
length of a convex lens.

MODULE 9: REFLECTION OF LIGHT – This module aims to enable you to demonstrate a
procedure in verifying the laws of reflection; discuss how to determine the focal length of
a concave mirror; and, apply equation and ray diagram to determine focal length of a
concave mirror.

MODULE 10: RESISTANCE – This module aims to enable you to describe three methods for
determining resistance; to discuss the functions of a multi-tester; and to use a multi-tester
to measure resistance, voltage and current.

MODULE 11: CELLS IN SERIES AND IN PARALLEL – This module aims to enable you to
differentiate combination of cells in series and in parallel, in terms of the resulting total
voltage and current in the load connected across the combination of cells.

MODULE 12: RESISTORS IN SERIES AND IN PARALLEL – This module aims to enable you to
compare the properties of resistors in series and in parallel, particularly the total current,
total voltage and total resistance.
