P3 Unit 28 Health and Social Care

P3- Explain ways in which health and social care workers support
the independence and wellbeing of older people:
In this assignment I will talk about which health and a social care worker
supports the independence and wellbeing of the older individual who is
unable to move their legs efficiently and has high blood pressure, as well as,
is diabetic.

Firstly, into the role comes in the occupational therapist, who when visits the
older individual observes the area the person lives and makes the
improvements around the house in order to help them live easier and do their
daily activities more easily. One of the main improvements which the
occupational therapist might make is to place handles and railings; which are
there to help the older person to move around the room more efficiently. This
could help the individual to complete their daily activities but with the extra
support.

Another improvement which could be made by the occupational therapist is to
raise the toilet seat and also out the handles in the toilet rooms, so that they
are capable of going to the toilet with the support of the handles. This could
prevent injuries as the individual will have something to hold onto which
means that they will have a safer environment which is very important. The
handles could also prevent them from slipping and hurting themselves.

It is also important to make a low step in the pathways, so that the older
individual would be able to move around more efficiently and could easily get
into their garden or if they need to go to a doctor appointment which will
require leaving the house. The occupational therapist would provide the
individual with a lanyard which will have an emergency button on it, which
the individual could press, in case of an emergency. This is very efficient as the
carer or the person who is looking after them could come and help the
individual.

Another improvement which could be made in the house of the individual
might be to make the table with lorry legs so that when the older person eats,
they are able to pull the table closer to them in order to eat or to make the
area more comfortable for them. For example, if they pull the table closer
they would be able to reach their cup of water. It is important for the carer to
come in during the mornings and evenings and give the individual the right
amount of the medication. The carer will have a safety key which they could
use in case of the emergencies. This could be very helpful if the individual
doesn’t feel well or if they have injured themselves. It is also important to
have a wheelchair indoors in order to make it easier for the individual with
