D2 evaluate the usefulness of psychological approaches to health and social care practce

Biological approach evaluaton

Psychological approaches are extremely useful in both health and social care for patents and their
families. The biological approach is useful in these practces as its methods and techniques can be
used to diagnose, manage and treat illnesses and diseases. This approach is useful as it allows for an
understanding of a genetc predispositon to illness and disease. In health care practces, such as
doctor surgeries, the understanding of genetc predispositon to illnesses can allow for quicker
diagnosis and therefore management of the illness. This could potentally save lives if an illness is
identfied quickly so the patent can receive the specific care that they need. Moore specifically,
health professionals like general practtoners may help with the diagnosis of complicated inherited
diseases such as the Huntngtonns disease if they understand the concept of genetc predispositon.
In social setngs, like clinics, professionals who understand genetc predispositon may provide
support for family members or suggest and advice those with similar symptoms to seek diagnosis.
This makes genetc predispositon partcularly important for patents and their families as they can
become aware that they also may be at risk from the illness or disease. It can give people tme to
make changes to reduce risks. However, this method does have its limitatons as the results for tests
can be difcult to analyse as well as taking longer periods of tme to carry out and create a care plan
after the results. If patents know that they are at a risk to a certain illness they may not be able to
make many lifestyle changes in order to minimise its efects of chances of occurring. (Impact-study
2017).

Moedicaton is also an important feature of the biological approach and more specifically in health
care practces, it is important as it helps to manage complex mental illnesses such as depression
through the use of drugs such as Prozac. It enables patents to be able to return to a more relatvely
normal day to day functon. However, the use of medicaton is critcised in this case as it treats the
symptoms of the illness and not necessarily the route cause. This would therefore limit the
efectveness of medicaton like Prozac as if it were stopped the patent may stll experience
symptoms of depression. Moany medicatons also result in the patent experiencing side efects; for
instance, Prozac can result in numerous side efects such as restlessness, itching and rashes.
Moedicatons arennt always suitable for everyone so it can difer from person to person partcularly if
they are used for the elderly or those who are pregnant. ( Drugs 2017).

The biological approach is demonstrated in social care as professionals are able to understand the
efects of stress. This is important in social care like schools as it can provide both long and short
term support for pupils. This is also beneficial as these professionals may not necessarily require
large amounts of training to be able to help efectvely. In health care practces professionals who
understand stress are important as it can help in communicaton with patents. This can help relax
patents and put them at ease as the professional may be able to ofer advice or speak in a suitable
manner. However not all health or social professionals may understand this or know when to
demonstrate acknowledgement that a patent is stressed. ( Alvord M. 2017).

The understanding of developmental norms is also useful as it enables children who need extra
support in social setngs, like schools and nurseries, to be identfied and provided with it. However,
these methods can be limited as they can take long periods of tme to show results like a nursey
nurse helping a child learn to speak who is shown to be behind the average development. ( Golzari
M. 2017).
