Human Psychology & UX Laws
Psychological Principles
Psychology & UX design
● Go hand in hand to create a seamless user experience
● Psychology is a powerful tool to understanding the user
● You have the ability to interpret how the human brain functions - helps to understand
how a design would be perceived by the user
● You can make products that hook your user’s brain

Attention
Attention
● Involves selecting things on which to concentrate from the available possibilities
○ At a single point in time
● You focus on information that’s relevant to what you’re doing
● Selecting sensory stimuli while ignoring other stimuli
○ Visual, sound, smell, etc.
● Attention is a limited resource
● Goal directed attention:
○ We’re looking for something in particular, such as a terminal in an airport
21
, ● Stimulus driven attention:
○ We have a vague goal of something, such as having a meal, but we don’t
know what that meal is yet. A restaurant menu helps us to find the end goal
with descriptions and images
Doherty Threshold
● Productivity soars when a computer & its users interact at a pace that ensures
neither has to wait on the other
○ <400 ms
● Waiting time affects information stored in the working memory
● Losing the train of thought can cause lower productivity
● Progress bars & animations can help make wait times tolerable regardless of their
accuracy
Multitasking
● Switching your attention among different tasks
● Overloads peoples’ capacity to focus
● Could be detrimental to performance
○ Time increased, lost train of thought, errors occur
● Technology development
○ Support users so they can easily switch their attention back and forth
