Introduction
This report is about health and safety measures taken to ensure the experiment is carried out safely.
Therefore, I'll be reporting on how two different scientific departments are adhering to health and
safety regulations. In addition, I will explain the possible hazards that could occur during the
experiment and how it should be handled. This will be accomplished by explaining how health and
safety measures in a scientific organisation comply with legislation. Moreover, I will describe the
main activities of the organisation and potential hazards in each department, and explain specific
health and safety management systems such as how to improve the standard of health and safety.
Finally, evaluate the measures taken to ensure a high standard of health and safety that comply with
legislation which includes the benefits and constraints of following the system for the employee and
the company.

Health and safety
Health and safety is defined as a law that is designed to keep people safe at the workplace and in
public settings from harm and danger. These concepts explained that the workplace should be safe
and out of danger for the employer to work, which means that employees, customers, and visitors
should be protected which is also known as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. This is because
the first major piece of health and safety legislation is the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974,
which provides employers' fundamental responsibility to workers and members of the public in their
workplace. Other legislation includes RIDDOR, COSHH, CLEAPSS, COMAH and PPE. Therefore, the
employer must agree to the policies and should follow these rules in order to carry out the
experiment safely.

Therefore, by supervising the employee about possible hazards it avoids any chance of an accident
happening. This is because hazardous substances can be more concentrated and cause harm and
injury besides it can damage the surrounding environment.
Symbol Explanation

Combustible and The combustible and fire could cause burns and therefore a
flammable potential hazard. It may also burst into a spontaneous
flame. Therefore, make sure to keep away from direct heat
and open flame.

An explosive It can cause an explosion due to fire. Also, it can catch fire
easily. Therefore, to prevent this from occurring it should
be stored out of reach and keep explosives away from heat
sources.

Dangerous to the It causes harm to the environment, such as toxic to aquatic
environment life and it has a long-lasting effect e.g nuclear fuel.
Therefore, it should be kept out of reach as it can harm the
environment.

Oxidising It can catch fire easily. Therefore, to prevent this from
happening it should be kept away from heat sources and
flammable substances.

, Toxic If inhaled it could cause death, for example, respiratory
problems because it is possible to block the airway in the
lungs, meaning that it would be hard to breathe. This leads
to several poisoning and other diseases.

Corrosive Corrosive could cause Irritation to the eye and skin which
can cause burning. Cell and tissue damage and also may be
harmful if inhaled. Therefore, wear goggles and gloves.

Gas Under pressure Gas under pressure can cause an explosion. Must keep gas
bottles and other pressurised containers out of direct
sunlight.

Long term health Long term health hazards could cause allergic reactions,
hazards which can also lead to damaging cells and tissue which
causes cancer. Moreover, it may cause genetic defeat and
damage to oranges and fertility and unborn children.
This can cause long term and serious health issues.

RIDDOR
RIDDOR stands for reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulation. This means
that if any accident happens then it needs to be reported and fill out the accident forms. If an
accident occurs makes sure that there is no immediate risk of further injury and damage and also
ensures that no other students and staff are at risk. The affected person should immediately receive
medical help. As a result, RIDDOR was created to ensure that any major health incidents in the
workplace are reported because not all injuries are the same, meaning that not all injuries must be
reported through RIDDOR.
Finally, the form of accident should be complete if necessary. What needs to be reported
- Death
- Fractures such as in arm, finger and toes
- Amputations
- Injury like loss of vision or reduction in sight
- Any crush injury to the head and brain damage or internal organs
- Serious burns
- Any loss of consciousness
- Any other injury
Therefore, it is possible that any accident happens during the experiment so it needs to be reported
and should seek medical help if it's serious. Link for accident forms

COSHH
COSHH stands for control of substances hazardous to health, and this requires the employer to take
control of the substance that can cause injury and hazard. The uses of different substances,
hazardous liquids and chemicals are flammable which give off a vapour that will be mixed with air
