professionals in health and social care. Argyles communication cycle is
used between two individuals, this could be between a professional and
their service user, or between colleagues. The other theory of
communication which will be discussed is Tuckman’s stages of group
interaction, this communication is between a group of people, it can be
used in multi-professional or multi-agency settings and also between
professionals and the service user’s family. Communication is one of the
key ways in which we build and maintain relationships with other
individuals, this is why it is so important to know how to communicate
effectively as a health and social professional.
Argyle’s Communication Cycle
Michael argyle was a well-known social psychologist who researched and
developed theories about human communication and interpersonal
interaction. In 1972 Argyle invented the ‘Communication Cycle’ theory,
this theory sets out how effective communication can occur in one-to-one
situations. Effective communication is where each individual is fully
involved, where they understand what is being communicated, where
they can respond well and feel comfortable expressing their opinions and
feeling. This communication cycle is a 6-stage process; the idea occurs,
message coded, message sent, message received, message decoded, and
