Outline the psychodynamic approach in psychology. Discuss one or more differences between the
psychodynamic approach and the humanistic approach. [8 marks]

The psychodynamic approach focuses on the unconscious mind and internal mental processes (for
example Freudian slips, thoughts and emotions). Freud put forward the idea of the structure of
personality which consisted of the ID, ego and superego. The approach also includes the five
psychosexual stages of development (oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital), suggesting that
underdevelopment at any one of these stages may cause a change in behaviour.

The humanistic approach differs from the psychodynamic approach as it takes a very holistic
approach to behaviour as opposed to the reductionist approach the psychodynamic takes. This
means that the psychodynamic approach reduces behaviour down to unobservable, unconscious
processes and disregards other influences on behaviour (like biological and environmental
influences). Alternatively, the humanistic approach observes the person as a whole to determine
effects on behaviour.

Additionally, both approaches put forward untestable concepts meaning that there are both
unfalsifiable. However, the psychodynamic uses case studies to investigate concepts such as the
Oedipus and Electra complexes. The humanistic approach has very little research evidence due to
the untestable nature of concepts such as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
