Issue 5 America Essay - Progress of Civil
Rights after 1945
Effective Black Leaders - correct answer-K1 - Stokely Carmichael was a prominent organiser
in the civil rights movement in the US and the global pan-African movement. He was one of
the original SNCC freedoms riders of 1961 under Diane Nash's leadership. He was
controversial and charismatic who popularised the phrase 'black power'.

K2 - Malcolm X was a minister and a leader in the civil rights movement and a support of
Black Nationalism. He urged his fellow black Americans to protest themselves against white
aggression 'by any means necessary'. His charisma and oratory skills helped him achieve
national prominence in the Nation of Islam. He said many famous quotes such as "any time
you beg another man to set you free, you will never be free."

A- New black leaders such as Carmichael and Malcolm X were important to the
development of the Civil Rights Movement as they attracted lots of media attention and
divided public opinion across the nation - this focused even more attention on the

as an active KKK area and was a sign that violence wouldn't have effect on the organisation.

K2 - the SNCC (Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee) was a campaign founded in
1960 by a series of white and black students.
The leader was a Ella Baker and they aimed to allow young people to emerge in direct
action protests and have more of a voice in civil rights.
They were involved in 'freedom rides' which was when members decided to travel from
Washington DC to New Orleans using "white only" facilities which caught attention.

A- the NAACP actually won the fight to end segregation in schools in the famous Brown vs
Topeka case in Supreme Court and was a massive success for the organisation and for
black people.

A+ - In 1966, Stokely Carmichael was elected head of SNCC, he focused on 'Black Power'
and famously stated that he did 'not know how much longer we can stay non-violent'. While
