Unit 5- Meeting individuals care and support needs-
Equality-
Equality means having the same rights and being equal because it is extremely
important for maintaining people’s rights and ensuring that every individual feels
valued and safe. Imagine how you would feel if you were being treated differently or
being discriminated against because you fall into the 9 protected characteristics.
Also, it is important to make sure that everyone gets equal opportunities, this
includes having equipment for the disabled and elderly so they can join in or making
sure if someone has a wheelchair it's accessible so they can easily get in and out.
Diversity-
Diversity is a variety of different nationalities and accepting differences, it is
important to be able to recognise people’s differences and ensure everyone is
treated the same. People are different if many ways this includes, weight, height,
they way they dress, age, sex and ethnic group and these differences is what makes
everybody unique. Everybody should have the chance to express themselves if that
includes, wearing clothes that are cultural or learning about how everybody is
entitled to their different opinion’s and having different values and beliefs.
Discrimination-
Direct discrimination- This is where you are treated worse than another person or
other people because you have on of the protected characteristics. For example, a
late adult is not asked if they want to participate in a social activity because of their
age even though in this example it was a bake sale. The individual who was not
included loved cooking in their spare time as therapy to let out their stress and would
have loved to be involved in it. This is not fair because this individual was
discriminated against because of their age even though they were fully able to
participate.
Indirect discrimination- This is where there is a policy that applies in the same way
for everybody but disadvantages a group of people who share a protected
characteristic. For example, a social club will only accept a driver’s licence as proof
of identification even though this excludes people with disabilities who legally are not
allowed to drive. This particular parent with disabilities was supposed to go to a
parents meeting at this social club and was denied entry because she could not
drive, and she was indirectly discriminated against because she fell under the
disability characteristic.
Associative discrimination- This is where discrimination is based on an individual’s
association with another person belonging to a relevant protected group. For
example, not employing a mother because she has a disabled child even though she
needs to provide for her child, like any other parent and she should have an equal
opportunity as a mother of a non-disabled child should have. This count as

associative discrimination because she is being discriminated against because her
child is disabled. (GOV 2022)
Case study one:
Tremayne is a 54 year old male with autism. Tremayne was treated with a broken
leg in a community hospital but his injury was quite severe as he broke his leg in
three places. He is supported by carers that come into his home but they don't live
with him. Tremayne has a wheat allergy but does not understand how to manage it.
He can get angry and disruptive that can distress other service users.
Case study two:
Aishia is a 82 year old female with vascular dementia. She was treated in a
community hospital from pneumonia. Aishia lives alone and she is single and has no
family she also is practising buddhism. Aisha's neighbour is concerned about her
safety and living alone. Aishia's neighbour mentioned how her flat is usually dirty and
there often is no food in her kitchen. While Aishia has been hospitalised she has
been using an incontinence pad regularly. Her dementia is getting more severe and
she has been hallucinating in hospital and speaking to people who are not there.
P1: Explain the importance of promoting equality and diversity-
Tremayne- Could potentially be discriminated against because he has a protected
characteristic which is disability because of his autism. He may face indirect or direct
discrimination when he has outbursts. Tremayne is receiving support from carers
who are not providing person centred care. This is because tremayne doesn't
understand what foods he can and cannot eat and his carers should be helping him
with meal preparation and ensuring he is eating essential nutrients and giving him
the options of better eating habits. He also is not getting the support he needs in
terms of advocacy services as Tremayne seems like he lacks capacity and he has
the right to access these services so all decisions around his care are in his best
interest. Equality and diversity are important in his case as where he has a protected
characteristic he may face discrimination becuase of his behavours and this should
not affect his care because of his disability. To promote equality and diversity it is
important that staff working with tremayne have empathy so they can understand
how he may be feeling and put themselves in his shoes so he is being treated the
way they would like to be if they were in his situation. This can help to predict his
behaviours and understand the emotion triggered by his emotions which will help
communicate with him. This will also help to establish engendering trust between
tremayne and professionals which will help tremayne feel that he is receiving respect
and his dignity is being upheld. This will make him feel valued and more comfortable
with the care that is being provided to him. (GOV 2015)
Aishia- Has a few protected characteristics from the equality act that she may be
discriminated against including religion or beliefs, disability, and age. Because she is

vulnerable individual she potientially may experience indirect or direct discrimination.
Aishia has been not receiving the support she requires as someone with the needs
she has should be in supported living like a residential home or have domiciliary
carers. Because of Aishia not eating regularly due to lack of capacity her immune
system can weaken which would make it harder for her body to fight off infections.
Equality and diversity is important for Aishia for her religion for one as while being
treated the staff need to think about her dietary needs as buddhist commonly don't
eat certain vegetables like garlic, onion and chives as they believe that these have
an impact on those who are just beginning to cultivate as they produce hormones
when cooked. They also follow a lacto-vegetarian diet which means they eat dairy
products but not eggs, poultry, fish, or meat which will have to be taken into
consideration while supporting her. So Aishias equality and diversity is being
promoted. It is important that the staff working with her are honest so Aishia can
have an engendering trust with staff which will help Aishia to trust that staff are going
to treat her that they will take good care of her and make sure all her rights are being
promoted to uphold her dignity. This promotes equality and diversity which will make
Aishia feel valued and like her care is person centred and it isn't generic and not
meeting her care needs. staff being emphatic will also help for her to trust them and
promote equality as because of Aishia having dementia her care needs will change
and so will her behaviours. So it is important professionals put themselves in her
position and realise it's just her disease and that it is not personal and her quality of
care is not being affected due to this.
P2: Explain the skills and personal attributes necessary for
professionals-
Treymayne- To build a professional relationship a professional would have to have
people skills which in tremaynes case patience, problem solving skills, flexibility as
he may have better days than others, and sense of humour so they don't take things
personally. They would also need to have good communication skills because
Tremayne has autism. This is where individuals struggle with social skills, speech
and non verbal communication so supporting someone with autism it is vital to talk in
short clear sentences, being aware of the tone you are using, and . Recognising
behavioural triggers, and structural routines as it can help individuals like Tremayne
make sense of their day. Observations are important. There may be certain
environments that can trigger someone with autism for example loud noises, lots of
people, and change of routine can trigger behavioural reactions. While working in a
health and social care setting it is important to have the six 6 cs which include
compassion, caring, courage, commitment, competence, communication skills. This
will help improve the service they provide. Negotiation skills like using less
communication and compromising with tremayne will help when dealing with conflict.
But it will also help to make sure his needs are being met and care is being delivered
to him with a person centred approach and he is not being provided poor care just
