Each group is made up of 20% of the population. This means that the bottom group represents the
average income of the 20% of households who have the lowest incomes in the UK. The top group is
the 20% of households with the highest incomes.

Original income is income from jobs, private pensions and interest from savings.

Gross income is original income plus benefits (such as child benefit, universal credit and state
pension).

Net income is gross income minus tax.
