1. Define the key structures found in the skeletal system.
The axial skeleton- protects the brain, heart, and lungs
Bones- Provide the rigid skeleton that constitutes the internal framework the body needs to
stand
Joints- (also referred to as an articulation) is where two bones come together
Cartilage- The tough but flexible tissue that covers the ends of the bones of freely moveable
joints and protects bones by preventing them from rubbing against each other
Ligament- A connective tissue that binds one bone to another
Tendons- A connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone
2. Name the three types of muscle found in the body.
Striated muscle- (also known as skeletal muscle) moves all bones and controls facial expressions
and eye movement.
Smooth muscle- (or visceral muscle) lines the walls of the internal organs, such as the intestines
Cardiac muscle- is a combination of striated and smooth muscle. Only the heart has cardiac
muscle
3. Define the two main divisions of the nervous system:
a. Central nervous system
(CNS) Nerves inside the brain and spinal cord that sends signals to other parts of the
body
b. Peripheral nervous system
(PNS) All nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord
4. Define the key structures and organs associated with the respiratory system.

5. Define the structures of the upper respiratory tract and the lower respiratory tract.
Upper respiratory tract- nose, pharynx (throat), and Larynx (voice box)
Lower respiratory tract- trachea (windpipe), bronchial tree, and lungs
