Unit 3 Assignment 3 Aleena Habib

P4- Explain possible priorities and responses when dealing with two incidents or emergencies in a
health and care setting.

Case study: Conway primary school is located in a woodsy area with a river running through it. There
are over 300 kids there and they have all been briefed about what they’re required to do if there
was a flood or if there was a fire. Due to being placed so close to a river, there are many policies and
procedures put in place in case of emergencies like flooding as well as policies and procedures for
fires too. The teachers are required to follow these different policy and procedures in order to help
them and the children get to safety. In case of an emergency fire, the children and required to
evacuate and go to the furthest playground away from the fire and line up in their designated areas.
There are many practise fire drills that occur during the months in order to ensure that none of the
children forget what the procedure is. When there is a fire, the teachers are required to pull the fire
alarm and ensure that all students are out of the school as well as phoning the fire people in. The
following procedures that take place after a fire alarm are the children would go and exit through
the nearest fire exit. The teachers are also required to have two-way communication radios on them
in order to know whether or not someone is still in the building. As well as this, the children aren’t
allowed to pick up any of their belongings and they must evacuate in silence and registers are to be
taken to ensure all children are present and none are left in the building. There are 8 steps that are
taken into account when flooding: making a list of all the areas that have a high level of flooding ot a
low level, look into the likelihood of the flood affecting you, prepare before hand in case of an
emergency, get a list of people who are local that are able to help if the incident occurs, make a list
of all the numbers you need in case of the incident, be aware of the actions that would occur, have
specific arrangements arranged with other authorities and establish a list of people who have special
requirements and their needs in advance.

The primary school would have fire extinguishers available so if the fire was to spread too far or
come inside the building, they would use it in order to prevent it from spreading. As well as this, the
teachers should make sure that the doors inside the building remain closed after. This is because
closing the door would mean the fire would spread at a slower rate and the children would have
more time to escape.

A member of staff should be required to call the fire service and explain the situation clearly and
how it had occurred. The fire services would then give them advice on how to minimise the risk and
how to effectively keep everyone safer. But before they call the fire services, they should ensure
they are a safe distance away from the fire and all the students are with them. They should also
inform the fire services if any electrical appliances were left on during the time.

The primary school would also have sandbags available as they are located by the river. The
members of staff would have been talked through how they should place the sandbags and where
they should place it in order to make it more effective. This is so it allows the rate of water that
enters the classes reduce. As well as this, they are required to close the doors before they leave so,
as well as the sandbags, this slows down the water flow. The teachers would have been briefed that
two of them are required to get the sandbags in order to make it efficient.

As well as this, they are required to keep the children away from the flood water in order to prevent
the children from being infected from it or harmed by the chemicals that are present within in. Due
to the water being mixed with toilet water, sewage water and toilet water it would increase the
child’s risk of getting an infection or harming themselves by drinking it accidentally. The staff are
required to keep the children a far distance away from the water as they would end up misbehaving
and may become too excited or panicked that they misbehave.
