Unit 14: Physiological Disorders
A.P1

In this document I will be investigating and comparing two different types of physiological
disorders and explaining the symptoms, causes effects of these disorders. I will also be
analysing how these physiological disorders make changes in the body’s systems as well as
its functions, whilst evaluating how they additionally impact the health and well-being of a
service user. When service users visit health care professionals, it is important that these
professionals know how to diagnose them correctly. Therefore, I will also be describing the
diagnosis methods required to in order to find out if people have these disorders and
treatments methods are necessary. The two physiological disorders I have chosen are
coronary heart disease and type two diabetes.

Coronary Heart Disease
Coronary heart disease effects the function of the heart and although it doesn’t directly
affect other functions in the body, it can cause a heart attack resulting in a lack of blood to
the heart and to the rest of the body. This is different to type two diabetes as it affects
blood vessels and nerves which can result in any systems in the body to being affected.

1
Coronary heart disease is a condition affecting the blood vessels that supply the heart with
blood. A build-up of fatty deposits in the coronary arteries causes a blockage or an
interruption, in the coronary arteries, resulting in the supply of the blood to the heart to be
reduced. These fatty deposits are called atheroma and begin to build up on the walls of the
arteries around the heart – known as atherosclerosis. With age, the blood of an individual
with coronary heart disease becomes thicker, meaning the heart will have to work harder in
order to pump oxygenated blood around the body. Due to the fact that this disorder causes
a reduction of the flow of blood to heart, it affects the circulatory system because this
system 2circulates blood around the body via the heart, arteries and veins, delivering oxygen
and nutrients to organs and cells and carrying their waste products away. Therefore, the
rest of the body may shut down because oxygenated blood is not travelling to the areas of
the body that need this oxygenated blood in order to function.
