Unit 26 assignment 1

Methodology of research
In this assignment will explain the methods that are used for research as well as beginning
to plan a research on a complex current issue affecting the travel and tourism sector. The
first task will include examples of different types of research with their advantages and
disadvantages while also comparing them to each other. In task two, I will begin my plan
surrounding the issue that Thomas cook is facing while also providing different examples of
what are the opinions of other people found from online sources.
What is research?
Research is the process, which we can carry out in order to get the information to our
question or problem. There are different types of research, which includes primary,
secondary, qualitative and quantitative.
What is intervention – in other words, it is the purpose of the research, intervention
would be done for solving a conflict or to influence other people.
What is non-intervention – this is the research done for no specific reason other than
personal gain.
What is action research –action research is the research done by completing tasks like
questioners to get a result that could be useful to many people.
The main types of research include:
Primary
Secondary
Quantitative
Qualitative
Primary
Primary research is a method that is used by individuals who conducting their own
information collecting it themselves by completing a range of activities, resulting it in
brand new data. The most common activities that are used in this research method are
questioners or one to one interviews as it enables the person doing the research to ask
more precise questions resulting in an more unique response which then would mean
that the
Which can include questioners or one to one interviews. This way of collecting data
could be useful as it can be done through using only certain market groups, which could
give answer that is more precise.
Advantage – some of the advantages of primary research include that it is straight from
the source meaning it is more likely to be reliable which would make the answer to our
problem more accurate.
Moreover, the data found is relevant to the topic of choice meaning it will be most useful to
the research that is done by the individual. Moreover, there is a range of different ways to

collect primary data depending in what is available or what can be done. This gives the
person a way to decide what type of research is the most suitable for what they are trying
to answer.
Disadvantage –the downside of primary research is that it takes excessively much time,
which would delay the time taken to use the research for the problem or question asked in
the first place.
Secondary
Secondary research requires already existing source providing the information, this can be in
form of a blog or a news article such as the Travel weekly, which provides the latest news
occurring in the tourism industry. An example of a secondary piece of research could be
using an article to find out opinions of people and use their data to conclude your own
research.
Advantage –a benefit of using this type of research is that it saves time as the data and
information has been already completed which could include statistics or opinions, and
available to anyone who wants to use them. This means that the people who needs the
information would not need to go through the process of collecting it themselves.
Disadvantage –the information cannot always be reliable as on some online websites it is
very easy to put up information that may not necessarily be right. An example of this could
be Wikipedia where it is accessible to everyone and anyone can change the information,
which could mean that some people may have been wrong about what they have, wrote as
they could have been biased or given the wrong information.
Comparing primary and secondary research
The main difference between these research
methods is that primary research consists of
self-collecting new data however; secondary
research is using the data that has already been
collected and using it from a second source.
Most often people use secondary research for
their own research, as it is more accessible and
easier due to the development of the internet
and technology.
Qualitative
Quantitative research is based on opinions of target markets and on ranges of behaviours
on specific issues, they are usually questions with an in depth answer rather than just yes or
no. by completing this type of research the answer and results will be an more in depth
which could be needed depending on the type of research the individual is trying to
complete and on what answer he expects to get. Current quantitative methods in the
subject of marketing involve in-depth interviews with individuals or group discussions.
