The impact of the media in modern society can be
distorted and emphasised by the media and the way
they look at criminality. For example, as a result of
media coverage society may think that most crimes are
high profile bank heist but, a high percentage of crimes
are shoplifting.
Moral panic
Moral panic was theorised by Stanley Cohen and presented
in his book "folk devils and moral panic” Whereby he claimed
that the media over exaggerates the perception of crime
making society in a state of panic to believe that its much
worse than it is. An example of moral panic is the mods and
rocker gang activity which occurred in the easter of 1964.the
mods and rockers where two different gangs with different
characteristics and hated each other. When they originally
fought it was very low scale and there was little media
coverage so the media created a date where they would set
up their cameras and wait for it to begin. On that day the
media used titles such as” battle on the beach”-daily Herold
which is a huge over exaggeration. Thus, proves the media
can cause distort, exaggerate and abuse symbolism. Leslie
