A comparison of 3 countries: How do measures of a country’s economy and the
quality of life of its inhabitants help and hinder us to understand the true state of
development
The level of economic development and quality of life appear to vary greatly between
the countries of Norway, Mexico and North Korea. Norway is the most developed of
the three in terms of its GDP which is the 4th highest GDP in the world and is widely
considered to have a high quality of life as well. Mexico is part of the group of MINT
countries that have favourable economic prospects for the next 20 years or so and is
ranked 65th in the world concerning its GDP. North Korea is technically defined as a
LEDC and its GDP is ranked 175th in the world. It is still largely a communist run
country and a large amount of its GDP is spent on the military. However, even
though the initial picture is that Norway is the most developed followed by Mexico
and North Korea, it can be argued that this may not be as clear cut as it first seems
due to the many other ways that economic development and quality of life can be
measured.
