Capital Punishment

Collecting is something that is important in the criminal justice system, especially in

capital punishment. To understand how victims are affected by crime and whether the response

to their experience is adequate and effective, it is crucial to engage in data collection. In many

countries, national crime statistics fail to record all instances in which victims are affected by

crime [ CITATION UNO18 \l 1033 ]. Criminal justice researchers can engage in data collection

in various ways in capital punishment, including surveys, interviews, experiments, or focus

groups. One of the most common ways of gathering data is to use secondary data. Surveys are a

standard data collection tool used in criminal justice research “The Bureau of Justice Statistics

reports that there were 61 federal prisoners with death sentences in December 2018, the latest

year available. The federal government has executed fourteen prisoners since 1977: two in 2001,

one in 2003, 10 in 2020, and one so far in 2021In contrast, states had 2,567 prisoners on death

row at the end of 2018. Between 1977 and 2018, there were 1,490 executions in 34 states. Texas

accounted for 37% of all executions in this period. California had 736 people on death row in

2018, more than any other state. However, it has executed 13 people since 1977, most recently in

2006. Additionally, California Gov. Gavin Newsom put a moratorium on capital punishment in

, March 2019” [ CITATION USA19 \l 1033 ].

Annual Survey of Jails

The most current survey of jail and detention centers that the Bureau of Justice Statistics

is from 2018. This research is conducted on each detention and jail facility in the United States

except for the detention facilities on Tribal Land. The survey is conducted over six months,

starting in July and ending in December. A complete survey of detention facilities and jails is

conducted every five to six years, with an annual survey being conducted on a yearly basis to

attempt to get a baseline. The research is submitted by questionnaires submitted by mail and or

internet-based questionnaire. Once the data is collected, the survey is derived, and the statistics

submitted.

The validity of the yearly research and statistics is up in the air when a sample survey is

conducted due to the surveys not covering all of the necessary data needed to be collected yearly.

The complete census completed every five years is a complete and valid data set due to the

mandate of reporting and the need for accurate information. This data is then submitted into data

tables to where the data is broken down into line items based on individual statistics. Such as

how many juveniles or adults are arrested or held in custody at any particular time. This

information is easy to read and understand based on the information provided

[ CITATION USD20 \l 1033 ].
