NRP-513 Clinical Applications of Theory and Research

Scientific Paradigms of Nursing
Science

As discussed by Polit and Beck (2019), there are two paradigms that they talk about in

nursing and research, the first is the Positivism Paradigm and the second The Constructivist

Paradigm. Positivism according to Polit and Beck (2019), assume that it is ordered and that

there is only one reality, and value objectivity. Positivism uses quantitative research, which

means that data is gathered in a numerical fashion and analyzed in a statistical style.

Positivism and Empiricism focus on objective ways, fixed and controlled context, where there

is no bias and the researcher has little to no contact. Their goal is to test a hypothesis true of

false. Their data is quantifiable data, that either proves some type of measurable outcome to

prove truth or false.

The Constructivist Paradigm, also seen as a perceived view of science according to

McEwen and Willis (2019), states that science centers on descriptions that are derived from

collectively lived experiences, human interpretation, and learned reality, as opposed to

artificially invented. There is no single truth, each individual’s experience is unique and

reality. Polit and Beck (2021), states; Constructivist research yields rich, in-depth information,

insights are gained, new questions emerge. Qualitative research is used with Constructivism,

research is in real-life first-hand experiences, working alongside with the subjects and gaining

insight.

Polit and Beck (2021), state that despite the differences between the two paradigms,

they also have some features in common, they both aim to answer questions and solve
