Unit 7: European Destinations

P1:

A. Sarah and Malik, a couple in their early thirties, are keen mountaineers and are extremely fit
and healthy. They are going to take a two-week spring break to indulge their hobby.

Destination 1: Lake Achensee, Austria

Travel: The couple would be able to take flights from Manchester with most flights leaving around
9am. The total journey time would take 4 hours and would land in Salzburg. The return flights are
around 3pm to Manchester, a 2.5 hour flight in total. Furthermore, the flights cost £440 per person –
which is quite good as it allows them to check in one piece of hand luggage and checked luggage. If
they would like extra leg room, then that would cost them £30 each way, per person but as it is a
short flight then they wouldn’t really need to buy it. The airline is TUI. Once in Salzburg, they would
need to get to Lake Anchensee, which they can get there by hire car or by bus – which is a bit more
complicated.

Accommodation/ Facilities: There is plenty of cheap hotels in Lake Achensee which offer a good
stay. Travel Charme Fuerstenhaus is one for example. This hotel offers free Wi-Fi, a LCD TV, Spa
treatments, hot tub, room service, bar and airport shuttle. Furthermore, it is a 5 minute walk from
the centre of Lake Anchensee, and the views look out onto the lake with the mountains right next to
it. It costs £1103 for 14 nights, which is a good price for what is included in it. It is also the starting
point for hiking up many of the mountain trails.

Type of resort: It is a hotel which would be suitable for them as they will be able to relax in and
unwind after they have gone mountaineering. It is couple friendly and half-board. It has amenities
such as breakfast, room service and an airport shuttle so therefore caters to their needs well. It has
wellness facilities, such as a spa, hot tub, gym and many more which will suit the couples needs as
they are extremely fit and therefore would want to stay fit whilst on holiday.

Attractions: The main historical attraction is the Tratzberg Castle, which is assessable by a bus ride
that takes 1.5 hours through the mountains which they will enjoy. The bus ride doesn’t cost anything
as when they book into the hotel they will be given an ‘Anchensee Card’ which allows them to hop
on and off the bus rides in the area. As they enjoy mountaineering, they may also enjoy doing some
rock-climbing, which is a natural and built attraction as there is both indoor and outdoor facilities for
all abilities and at a cheap price. There is also the lake which is a natural attraction and allows them
to participate in different water sports if they would like too. Furthermore, as they are a healthy
couple, they may want to go to a restaurant such as Via Pasto, which serves healthy food at a cheap
price and has opening hours to suit them and their daily activities.

Destination 2: Wengen, Switzerland

Travel: There is plenty of flights to Geneva Airport from around the UK. Assuming the couple are
flying from London (easy to get too in the UK), the flights are as early as 8:15am in the morning. They
can fly with various airlines such as EasyJet and can pay for extra luggage if they wish to do so as it
isn’t very expensive – average £36 per bag, per way. The cheapest flight from London Stanstead to
Geneva is £192 per person, so about £400 in total – they may also wish to pay for extras such as
priority boarding, etc. From Geneva Airport, Wengen is a 2 hour drive away so therefore they can

, choose to take a bus or a rental car would be suitable. Average prices for a rental car is around £20 a
day and the cheapest rental car is £257 for 14 days which is a good price.

Accommodation/ Facilities: The cheapest option is a hostel called ‘Valley Hostel’ which is £59 a night.
This has its advantages and disadvantages, for instance the obvious advantage is that it’s cheap and
has good facilities, however, the main disadvantage is the fact that it’s a hostel and therefore the
genders sleep in different sections. Although, they could choose to stay there for a week and then
choose to go to a resort/ hotel. Valley Hostel provides a range of facilities such as free Wi-Fi, car
parking, self-service kitchen, showers and bed linen. This suits their basic wants and requirements as
they most likely will wat to be doing activities during the day. It is also in a good location in the valley
as this means there is mountain trails nearby. It is also close to shops, bars and restaurants that they
can visit. This is very basic accommodation that they may or may not find suitable for 2 full weeks,
therefore, it’s recommended that they stay there for 1 week and then spend a bit extra on a resort
type hotel in order to enjoy themselves fully.

Type of resort: If they choose to split their stay in the hostel with another accommodation, then
Chalet Mirravile is a good option. It is a ski resort and a 3 minute walk from the cable cars, however
as they like mountaineering then they may choose that instead of using the cable cars. The resort
offers free Wi-Fi, free parking, room service, restaurant/bar onsite, mountain views with all rooms,
coffee machine, a fully equipped kitchen and they speak a range of different languages. It would cost
£772 for a week stay, however it would provide them with comfort and meet all their needs.

Attractions: The town is next to a natural attraction which is Eiger mountain which is 3,970m high,
and has a range of trails for all abilities. There is also the forest that has pubs and restaurants in it, as
well as a lake for fishing, cycling trails and in the village there is plenty of activities to do such as a
sauna, gym, bowling, mini – golf, a heated pool, a cinema and plenty of shops. As well as skiing
facilities (built) however, as they will be visiting during the spring months they wont be in use as
there wont be much – if any snow.

Overall: I believe that destination 2 – Wengen Switzerland would be best for the couple. I believe
this because it is less traveling, cheaper and has more mountains that they will enjoy even if the
mountains will be less well known. I believe that if they choose to visit Austria, it will cost much
more and will find it harder to go to other places, even though they have the card which is a bennifit.
There is much to do in Switzerland for a cheaper price overall and especially considering they wont
have as much money an older person would have as they are in their early 30’s. Furthermore, the
accommodation in Wengen seems better than in Lake Anchensee as it would be harder for them to
move around, is more expensive and is harder to locate. It also takes a shorter time to get to
Switzerland with the plane – around 2 hours, so therefore, they are less likely to be as jet lagged, and
can spend more time doing the things they wish to do. They will also be able to get to other places
as there is a high possibility they will hire a car during their time in Wengen. This gives them more
freedom to explore and would work out cheaper than buying multiple train and bus journeys. In
Austria, if they wish to travel around, then that would be up to them to sort out and would make the
holiday even more expensive as the card they get given allows them to only travel to certain
locations. Although, a slight advantage Lake Anchensee has to Wengen is the fact that the food
would be cheaper as the exchange rate is good over there and the food is cheaper, only slightly
though.
