U16A1 D1 Assignment
(D1)- Suggest, with justification, ways of improving motivation in an
organisational setting.
There are many methods that can be used to improve motivation between employees so
that they are able to work harder and more efficiently. These incentives can vary as long as
they can benefit the employee for the long term in some way, shape or form. In this
assignment, methods of improving motivation in an organisational setting will be suggested,
with appropriate justification.
Pay
Pay and money is one of the most common ways for businesses to improve motivation for
employees so that they can work harder in an organisational setting, as money is an
everyday necessity that everyone needs and go to work for. Therefore, organisations would
use pay as a way to reward their employees as well as providing additional pay bonuses
such as wage rises as a reward for hard work and good performance. More money means
that it is a major financial incentive that employees would work hard for, since they can use
the money for essential things such as bills and food, but more money means that
employees can use it for items that give them personal satisfaction. This justifies the
method of pay for increasing and improving motivation, though in fairness not all
employees do not see pay raises as a form of motivation, as they see job satisfaction as a
bigger motivator instead of money. The average wage of a Morrisons’ worker is around £10
an hour, which is around the National Living Wage in the UK, giving Morrisons plenty of
chances to increase the pay so that employees are incentivised by this opportunity, meaning
they are able to work harder and become more motivated.
Staff Discounts
Another way motivation can be improved is by implementing staff discounts for all
employees. Many businesses offer discounts to their staff on their large range of products
including products belonging to other businesses who are affiliated with the staff’s
organisation. This is given as a benefit for the job, as well as being incredibly useful for staff
with lower incomes that can use these staff discounts as a way of purchasing products for a
lot cheaper than the original retail price. This justifies the method of staff discounts because
the opportunity to receive high quality products for a cheaper price will mean that
employees will likely work harder so that they are able to spend their limited wages in a
manner that is cheap and sensible. As a job benefit and reward, Morrisons can do this with
all of their employee by giving their staff exclusive offers and discounts that the general
public customer community base of Morrisons does not have access to. This could be sales
tactic such as BOGOF (Buy One Get One Free), half price deals on items ranging from food to
clothing to electronics. This allows staff to save a lot more money for other necessities such
as paying for bills. The chance to receive cheaper prices allows staff to work harder and
remain more motivated, making businesses like Morrisons to remain profitable due to how
effectively and efficiently staff are working to maintain their benefits.
