Task 1
A. Discuss how the application of nursing-quality indicators could assist the nurses in this case
in identifying issues that may interfere with patient care.
The NDNQI (The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators) originated by a
group of researchers in 1996 to indicate features of patient care primarily influenced by
Florence Nightingale who revealed such indicators to define the excellence of nursing
interventions
and positive patient outcomes (The Sentinel Watch, 2020). Some of these indicators
include patient falls, pressure ulcers, patient satisfaction with overall care, and restraint
prevalence. In the case scenario, the standard of care was not followed and it could have
assisted Mr J’s
nurse in recognizing the pressure ulcers forming likely from being restrained in bed.
Pressure ulcers or skin break down can easily be avoided by repositioning every 2 hours and
the nurse should also be doing a proper heat to toe assessment where she could have noticed
the redness. Also, the staff did not show the importance of the finding of the pressure ulcer
that had been reported and brushed off. By applying nursing indicators, personnel would
recognize the issues that may interfere with patient care. Following these guidelines, the
staff would avoid adverse outcome and improve the quality of patient care.
