Who is the primary speaker or writer? If you consult a commentary for your answer, be sure
to cite the source. (Drew)

, The primary speaker is Jesus.

Describe the original audience (Are they close followers of Jesus? Critics of Jesus? A
local church? The people of Israel? Etc.). Confirm with a commentary. (Ana)

The original audience are the disciples.

Identify any technical words or confusing points. (For example, Pharisee and scribe are
technical words.) What seems odd to you because of time, distance, or culture?

Because this passage has references to a garden and things within that garden, it may be
confusing to someone who does not have any knowledge of farming and gardening. In the
modern times and culture in which we are exposed to, it is not common for people to work
on farms and in gardens so people seldom know the terminology. The specific technical
words/phrases within this passage are “vine,” “branches,” “prunes,” and “bear fruit.”

Explain the technical words or confusing points, citing Bible resources in the course
content or Biblegateway.com. Passages contain elements that need to be researched.

The terms “vine” and “branches” refer to how the trunk of a fully developed vine has
branches coming out of it. If properly nourished, what are known as canes can emerge from
the branches. After some time, fruit will grow on these canes and must be pruned. Pruning is
the process of removing the undesirable tissue from the plant in order for new fruit to grow.
Referring to Jesus as the vine and us as the branches demonstrates the need for intimacy
and community between Jesus and humanity. The imagery of bearing fruit is the concept of
a strong “union with God” (The IVP New Testament Commentary Series - Jesus Declares
He Is the True Vine and His Disciples Are the Branches (15:1-6)). The idea of pruning the
branches is connected to God cleansing the branches of negativity. This is done in order for
Jesus to have a stronger relationship with the Father, and for us to have a stronger union
with God.

What are the main points of the passage? Do not rewrite it, do not explain it, but capture the
main points.

You cannot get through life without Jesus, he is the Messiah you must follow for
rewards. Remain loyal to Jesus’s words and you will be loved and sent to heaven for
your teachings of Jesus’s word.

What does this passage mean? Confirm with a commentary.

Jesus explains to the disciples that without faith in him there is no hope for happiness in life
without him, it will only bring you despair or worse. With Jesus, you are rewarded and live
a good life by the word of God. He is completing their joy by loving them, if they remain to
