Perception is key and how we conduct ourselves in the criminal justice system not only affects
those around us but the populations that we are sworn to care for. Those of us who are furthering our
knowledge and beginning our careers in the criminal justice field must be aware of how we are viewed by
the public, so that we may better understand how to serve them.
Differences are what make human beings so full of potential and mystery, showing us that one
experience would not be similar to someone else’s. One moment can greatly impact or ruin a person’s
entire well being and we must understand that different populations will have equally different
perceptions. Immigrants who begin new lives in this country have been painted in a negative light,
almost as though they were no longer human and the disadvantages that they face make it undoubtedly
hard for them to trust in the police.
According to the authors, Carola and Marcelo Suarez-Orozco (2020), one of the more harmful
stereotypes facing immigrants today is being seen as “bringers of crime”. This is especially true for
undocumented immigrants, particularly from Latin America who have been depicted as criminals,
rapists and murderers while those from the MIddle East are immediately suspected of being terrorists.
This sort of public disdain can easily affect how immigrants interact with criminal justice
practitioners, even fearing for their lives. Jennifer R. Najera (2020) writes that back in 2018, many
migrant children were taken from their parents at the border and were forced to live in terrible
conditions, though some of these families were reunited, the abuse they suffered will always leave a
stain on their memories.
, How do we, as criminal justice practioners meet the needs of those with a different
cultural or racial background? One thing that can change the shift of how an immigrant is
treated is having someone who can speak their language. Language is a way that we can
break down barriers and there is a ssense of comfort in speaking to someone who
wunderstands you, and it would put the person at ease in case they happen to find themselves
in trouble with the law.
I believe that this could be avoided by having the patience to see that the person means
no harm and simply could not communicate. While language in the U.S. has been a primary
symbolic integration preoccupation, in Europe, the overarching concern involves religion
(specifically Islam) and social practices (such as arranged marriages, female genital cutting, and
headscarves)—all said to be incommensurable with European ideals of gender equality,
autonomy, and individual choice (Carola and Marcelo Suarez-Orozco, 2020) this shows that
immigration is not only what some would seem as an “American” issue and is just as
complicated across the Atlantic.
I think that there is a level of fear when speaking of immigration, the fear of the
unknown, and a deep-seated dislike of differences. Criminal justice practitioners impact the
world we live in, from big to small and while I know that this can be difficult, no one deseres
to be treated less than they are.
I can understand how this may seem like an uncomfortable subject but we must
acknowledge and find solutions for the rampant racism and xenophobia that play a role in how
immigrants are treated. This is not only about holding dear to your own morals but it is also a
way to give those in the criminal justice system, especially the police, the necessary tools for
improvement.
