CJ210: Unit 2 Assignment
In a criminal investigation, the methods of inquiry are used to help reconstruct the past
and discover or create new knowledge. Criminal investigators are hard at work with little or no
information as soon as the call comes in. They include inductive reasoning, deduction,
classification, synthesis, analysis, hypothesis, theory, A priori, and A posteriori.
Inductive reasoning is basically a generalization made based on little evidence. In the
murder case of Karina Vetrano, the methods of inquiry have been both unsuceessfully and
successfully used to help solve her murder. Inductive reasoning involves forming generalizations
or assumptions based on specific events to get a general conclusion. For example, Karina
Vetrano was jogging alone when she was attacked. Therefore, most females are the most
vulnerable when they are alone. Then on the other hand is deduction which the only difference
from inductive reasoning is that it leads to a more specific conclusion. Such as, saying female
joggers are most vulnerable when they are alone. Karina Vertrano was alone when she was
attacked so that leads to the specific conclusion that she was at her most vulnerable when she
was attacked. Next, classification is the systematic organization of evidence into categories,
groups, or classes based on similar traits or characteristics. In Karina’s case the only real
evidence that had was DNA evidence from inside her body, on her cell phone, and under her
fingernails. So in this instance they were classified together because they were all DNA evidence
and later tested to be from the same source. Synthesis is the combining of separate parts that lead
towards a conclusion. Another fine example would be not only using the DNA evidence but, also
from a suspicious sighting of a man around the scene from one of the lead detectives. That
sighting later led to obtaining a DNA swab and later a confession. All that evidence combined
