Causes
- Haiti lies on the boundary of the Caribbean and North
American plates, which slide past one another in an east-
west direction;
- This is a conservative boundary;
- Stress builds up in points along the boundary and its faults;
- Eventually this stress is released in a sudden strong movement which causes
both plates to move and generate an earthquake;
- The fault system that ruptured this earthquake is called the Enriquillo-Plantain
Garden fault system;
- The unusually high magnitude of this earthquake was part of the reason for
the enormous damage to Haiti;
