Interview Summary
I am interviewing a healthcare colleague from a different hospital. Her name is Charlene, and she works at Georgetown University Hospital as a surgical coordinator for the department of Urology. Being a surgical coordinator involves collaboration with other departments and various disciplines. Her job on a daily requires that she work closely with other HCP, this is not a job she
can do solo. She must work with insurance companies for authorization of surgeries; anesthesia which is individual for each patient; and also work with the surgical centers to acquire time slots and make sure the appropriate equipment is available for each surgery, because not all surgeries and not all doctors use the same type of robotic technology. A particularly important factor to surgery is pre-operative clearance, an anesthesiologist is not going to put their license on the line if a patient is not medically cleared to be put under for a surgery. This is something that Charlene
must make clear to her patients on a daily basis when they question the need for a pre-operative clearance.
This interview was conducted using a few tips from the article “Twelve tips for conducting qualitative research interviews”. First, I had to prepare myself as an interviewer, which included me carefully planning what “the focus and scope of the research question” was going to be. Even though I know Charlene personally, as the article brought out, I did not want my interview to be ‘conceived as an informal chat with the interviewee; but instead, the interview to be used as a data-collection instrument which can be used to penetrate a number of
research questions.’ I included some predetermined questions such as “How long have you worked for Georgetown?”; “What made you transition from medical assistant to surgical coordinator?”; and “How is your workload given the current circumstances of the pandemic?” Tip 5 from the article included building rapport, we have a long personal history so fortunately
this is something we have already established. Charlene was incredibly open during the interview
and spoke freely. I listened more than I spoke, and with her help I was able to narrow done a problem that she has encountered along with other coordinators of surgery. (McGrath, C., Palmgren, P., Liljedahl, M. (2019))
Issue Identification
COVID-19 has created a lot of change related to what is involved in the pre-surgical scheduling, testing, and authorization. Considering the gravity of this pandemic, the coronavirus
has affected all areas of health care. Charlene must stay aware of the developmental changes with COVID-19, the type of testing that is done prior to surgery, and how COVID-19 affects patients awaiting surgery. Many times, patient do not get their COVID test, which is mandatory for surgery and this holds up their surgery. Although we have been in this pandemic for a year, there are still closures and issues with outpatient practices for patients to get their clearance. An interdisciplinary approach is necessary to resolve the issue of surgical procedures for patients
during a pandemic. Because surgery is not a single professional job, it is important to collaborate
with other offices and doctors to make sure surgeries go as planned and all parties are aware of what is going on.
“Care delivery involves a multitude of professional roles, configured in different structures and completing varied tasks.” With all the disciplines Charlene has to work with, one of the most vital efforts come down to effective communication. “The majority of team research
in health care focuses on acute care settings and tightly coupled collocated action teams (e.g., surgical teams, trauma and emergency medicine teams).” “Unique and complex team
configurations, as well as ongoing transformations in health care delivery systems, provide wide-
ranging opportunities about which team researchers can work to generate new knowledge.” With
