Short summary of plot The book is about an old man Santiago, a fisherman, and a young boy called Manolin. Santiago hasn’t
(max. 25 lines) in your own caught a single fish the last eighty-four days but he believes he’ll catch one the eighty-fifth day because
words that’s his lucky number. The father of Manolin doesn’t want Manolin to have contact with Santiago because
he's very unlucky catching fish. However Manolin still secretly visits the old fisherman, who taught him a lot
of fishermen skills, because Manolin thinks that Santiago needs to be taken care of and won't survive on his
own. Then the eighty-fifth day, Santiago goes out on his own and he caught a huge marlin. It took Santiago
a lot of afford to catch the fish, it even took him two days. After those two days he killed the marlin with a
harpoon. Some sharks smelled the blood of the marlin and are then trying to eat it. Santiago kills one shark
with his harpoon but knows it is a useless fight. In the end, only the carcass of the marlin is over and the old
man had nothing. Next morning, Manolin comes by and sees the old man in his terrible condition. While the
people were admiring the huge carcass of the marlin in the harbour, Manolin decides he wants to stay with
the old man no matter what his parents might say.
(Short) Character description Santiago: He's a really old fisherman, although he looks very old his eyes are still very bright and have the
of main character(s) colour of the sea. He had gone eighty-four days without catching a single fish. He and Manolin love watching
baseball, Santiago is a big fan of "The great DiMaggio" a base ballplayer. He also dreams of South-Africa
and the lions there.
Manolin: Is a young boy who learns how to fish from Santiago. Unfortunately other fishermen got more luck
catching fishes so the father of Manolin decide that Manolin should go with the other fishermen. Manolin
doesn't want to, he wants to stay with Santiago. In the end Manolin stays with the old fisherman Santiago.
Marlin: the huge fish Santiago catches.
Setting: where Near a Gulf Stream which is located between Cuba and the States.
Setting: when Somewhere middle 20th century, in September.
