Models of Grieving

Grief is natural; however, grief is complex process individuals encounter when they experience a

loss. Individuals may experience loss for various reasons, not necessarily for the death of a loved

one, such as ending a relationship, miscarriage, loss of employment, retirement, and more. At

any particular developmental stage, one may experience grief, and stages may vary from

individual to individual, as some may initially cry or others may feel anger or denial. Therefore, I

chose the Kubler-Ross model of grief, which is broken into five stages to help understand how

individuals experience grief and what emotions may be encountered at each stage (Zastrow,

Kirst-Ashman & Hessenauer, 2019).

The Kubler-Ross Model and Social Worker Application

The Kubler-Ross model of grief is divided into five stages of grief: denial, rage, and

anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance (Zastrow et al., 2019). This model helps a social

worker understand that the stages are common emotions an individual may experience.

Regarding hospice care, grief often begins before the death occurs; family, friends, and

caretakers anticipate an upcoming departure (Jennifer Bell, 2011). Social workers need to

understand that not all individuals go through the stages in sequential order to heal or cope with

their loss (Lucy Bregman, 2019). Some individuals will linger in specific stages while others

skip through. Due to the unique ways, individuals grieve the Kubler-Ross model will provide the

social worker a blueprint of what services and resources to offer to their client. For instance, if

the terminally ill patient takes refuge in religious practices, I would connect the patient with a
