6090 WEEK8
Full DSM diagnosis

Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder, Atypical anorexia nervosa

(F50.8) Z61.0 Loss of love relationship in childhood

Z91.5 Personal History of Self-Harm

Explain the diagnosis by matching the symptoms identified in the case to the specific

criteria for the diagnosis

In Gina’s case I decided to diagnose her with other specified feeding or eating disorder, atypical

anorexia nervosa (AN) because Gina met all of the criteria for AN minus criteria A, the low

BMI and body weight criteria, as outlined in the DSM 5. The AN symptomology she presents

with is criterion B persistent behavior that interferes with weight gain (limiting and restricting

food intake), criterion C of distorted body image (understanding feedback of her thin

appearance is a compliment) and Binge-eating/purging type (eating “too much” and throwing

up to lose the excess calories).

Differential Diagnosis

Another diagnosis I considered was Nonsuicidal Self-injury due to her cutting herself when

confronted about her eating habits. However, this diagnosis was ruled out as this was her first

occurrence and the criteria stated that there has to be 5 or more days within a year. I also

considered bulimia, but she did not meet the three-month requirement as well as there is not

enough evidence present to specifically state that she binges and then purges in a consistent

manner. I also considered anorexia nervosa, but this diagnosis had to be ruled as well due to her

weight being in normal range despite her being thin.
