Explain how you, as a social worker, might apply the grieving model you selected to your
work with families in a hospice environment.
Grief is the normal and natural response to the loss of someone or something important
to you. Grief normally occurs after a death, divorce, loss, departure from friends and family, or a
life loss event. Grief has no time limit and these emotions, behaviors, and thoughts many come
and go throughout the grieving process. There are many grieving models in the social work
practice that could be used when dealing with a client who experienced or experiencing grief. As
a social worker, I would use Kubler-Ross model. Kubler-Ross model consist of 5 stages: denial,
anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. In the denial stage the client believe that “this can be
true” or see things as a mistake. Stage two is when the client question themselves and start
feeling as if “it’s their fault or a feeling of guilt.” Kubler-Ross indicates that the third stage is
when the client may bargain with God. (Kirst-Ashman, 2016.) After bargaining, the client slips
into the fourth stage, depression. Last stage is the client finally accepting and understanding the
process. This is when the client acceptance the loss of their loved one and begin coping in a
positive manner. This grieving model would help a social worker with facilitating and managing
grief groups in a hospice environment. In a hospice setting, it is important that the client and/or
their family receive a grieving process to ensure that they receive the proper care and resources
they need to help with coping.
Explain why you selected to use the grieving model you selected versus other models of
grief.
There are several grieving processes to use in the social work practice. I
choose the Kubler-Ross grieving process because many clients dealing with grief do not
acknowledge the five stages that they go through. In my opinion, grief is hard to deal with and
