Grieving

The loss of a loved one is extremely difficult to handle. The grieving process is not

concrete and different for everyone. Coping methods are influenced by multiple factors including

the nature of the death, the relationship to the deceased, and the social and cultural context in

which bereavement is experienced (Morris, Fletcher, & Goldstein, 2019). Losing a loved one

changes individuals’ lives in multiple ways. Closure is not defined as forgetting about a loved

one but instead, ceasing to think about or love the person who passed away (Schreiner, 2016).

There are multiple techniques clinicians should utilize to help individuals handle the

bereavement process.

Ordinary People

The movie “Ordinary People” is about a family’s grieving process after they lost a child

in a boating accident. The youngest child, Conrad, was placed in a psychiatric hospital after

attempting suicide. Conrad’s relationship with his family has been challenging after the loss of

his brother but is working on controlling his triggers through counseling. His mother, Beth,

appears very angry regarding the decisions Conrad has made. He struggles with maintaining

healthy relationships with his peers and no longer wants to be a part of the swim team. Beth

became incredibly upset after finding out he quit the swim team and believes his actions are to

deliberately hurt her. His father does his best to support and understand Conrad and his wife.

While Conrad was at the psychiatric hospital, he met a girl named Karen. Karen was one

individual he felt comfortable confiding in if he was struggling. He was having a challenging day

and reached out to Karen for support. He found out that she had committed suicide which caused
