Social work profession requires us as clinicians to use skills to engage professionally, culturally
and emotionally the individuals we assist. Therefore, during the role play with my partner, I used
the following social work skills to engage and build rapport with her.
I used active listening to listen effectively and reflect on what my partner is saying, and also
engaging. Also, by using the active listening skill, it helps me and my partner build a therapeutic
relationship and show that I understand what my partner is saying (Simmons School of Social
Work, 2018).
Empathy was another skill I use, to understand my partner intellectually, emotionally and
culturally. Empathy skill helps me to imagine myself in my partner's situation and look for the
treatment that is best for her (Simmons School of Social Work, 2018).
I also use setting boundaries skill for ethical reasons and to help me not too burnt out easily
(Simmons School of Social Work, 2018).
The open-ended question skill also used to understand my partner more and to make her know
I am paying attention to her (Simmons School of Social Work, 2018).
I also use critical thinking skill to research the best treatment for my partner (Simmons School
of Social Work, 2018).
Furthermore, I use communication skill to discuss the treatment after researching it and write
a report that I might share with my partner's team if necessary (Simmons School of Social Work,
2018).
Also, since this is a CFI, I also use cultural sensitivity, which encourages me to be in constant
awareness that cultural differences exist, and gives me the desire to understand my partner
, without passing judgment (Domingue, 2017).
Cultural competence is another skill that helps me to be self-aware during engagement by
having a reflection of my own beliefs, systems, and biases, and also acknowledging that it might
get in the way of patient-centered care sometimes (Dominguez, 2017).
Finally, cultural humility will assist me in understanding that, no one person can understand
all aspect of cultures. Also, mindful of the manner in speaking; such as "how might you help me
see," instead of saying "I understand." (Dominguez, 2017).
The DSM-5 Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI) aspects that were most helpful in learning
about my partner's personal view of the problem is;
Cultural identity, cultural explanation of the illness, cultural factors related to the
psychosocial environment and levels of functioning, cultural elements of the clinician-patient
relation, and the overall cultural assessment
The following subsections assisted me with the assessment of my partner because cultural
consideration is essential in the process of working with a culturally diverse population,
especially when it has to deal with anxiety, where I would have to formulate a case, diagnose
and treat a culturally diverse individual, thereby avoiding biases, and misdiagnosis (Lu, Lim, &
Mezzich, 2018).
The assessment of a minority client can be challenging when a clinician from one ethnic or
cultural group uses the DSM-IV to evaluate compared to a nonminority especially when the
individual is from a different culture or ethnic group (Lu, Lim & Mezzich, 2018). Therefore, a
social worker would have to adjust treatment for a client to develop a plan that best fits the client
