A. I am a 9th grade co-teacher for Algebra. I have noticed that incoming freshmen struggle with so many
areas of Algebra. The math facts that stand out the most in recent years would be their multiplication
facts, using (x, y) coordinates to graph, and adding and subtracting negative numbers. In 1 st grade
students are learning how to add and subtract to 10, by the end of 3 rd grade they should be able to recall
and use multiplication facts to 81, and by 4th grade, recall
and use multiplication and corresponding division facts through the 12’s. If a student has not learned
their math facts in 3rd grade, going forward, each grade they will fall further behind. My research topic
idea is about finding the most effective Blended Learning instructional strategies to impact 3 rd grade
student performance of multiplication fact fluency for 3 rd grade Math.

When using the key words multiplication facts, several articles that were not related to elementary
school math came up. When I narrowed the key words down to instructional strategies for
multiplication, and included third grade, there were more relevant articles. Problems with multiplication
facts and retention of multiplication facts had more articles that seemed to be relevant to my topic, and
they included several for third grade as well. 3rd grade multiplication strategies gave the most useful
sources I found in using my chosen search words. I noticed that, as I entered more research words, a lot
of the same articles kept coming up. This made me think that several of the phrases I chose were very
similar. After using all 10 search phrases, I did have success with quite a few relevant ones.
