Task 2 – Corporate and Coding Compliance

C807 Healthcare Compliance

Western Governors University

A1. Each organization must take theses seven steps to ensure their employees remain

compliant with policies and actions to take once they discover breaches to those policies.

1. First, the company must establish the standards and procedures they wish the

employees to follow. It should also be understood that during this step, these

procedures would aid in the prevention of unlawful activities.

2. Second, upper-level personnel should be assigned the responsibility to oversee

compliance within the standards and procedures. When it comes to rules, the best way

for them to be followed is from the direction of higher-level employees to hold

accountability.

3. Third, the company wants to ensure that the employees will not engage in illegal

activities. Therefore, background checks should be conducted to assist in filtering out

those individuals that would not comply with the standards and procedures the

company has created.

4. Fourth, once the standards and procedures have been detailed, distribution to the staff

is essential. After issuance, the company should take the necessary steps to ensure

their team fully understands the expectations.

5. Fifth, companies should establish a monitoring/auditing system to identify illegal

activities by their staff. External and internal audits should be performed, and a

reporting system where an employee could anonymously report another employee to

avoid retaliation.

, 6. Sixth, companies need to enforce appropriate disciplinary actions for specific

offenses.

7. Seventh, a company should continuously monitor its compliance program to look for

ways policies and standards can be quickly followed and understood. If necessary,

these policies could and should be adjusted.

A2. Four roles within an organization that directly involves maintaining the compliance

plan are the Compliance Officer, HIM Compliance Specialist, Inpatient Audit Consultant, and

Outpatient Consultant/ChargeMaster Audit Consultant.

The Compliance Officer is accountable for developing/maintaining the policies and

procedures of the compliance program. This role requires managing the daily operations of the

program. The compliance officer would also establish a system to track violations in the program

and work with other departments to develop training for all staff. The compliance officer is

responsible for reporting all violations and identifying areas of risk and ensuring guidance is

provided to avoid the risk in the future. In addition to the compliance committee, this role has the

authority to execute any necessary action to maintaining an effective compliance program.

The HIM Compliance Specialist is specific to the HIM Compliance program, and they

report to the compliance officer. This role oversees the effectiveness of the HIM Compliance

program, which involves developing training programs for all personnel. Regular audits specific

to coding/documentation accuracy are also a part of this role. The HIM Compliance Specialist

will review claim denials or rejection due to coding issues, then implement corrective action

plans where needed. Last, this role would also be on the compliance committee and have the

authority to recommend revisions to the compliance program.
