Teen Pregnancy
Executive Summary
My SDOH Access to Healthcare Service relates to “Teen Pregnancy”. The access to
healthcare services, education, the use of contraceptives to decrease teenage pregnancy.
Teenage pregnancy has a high mortality and morbidity. Teenage girls 15 to 19 years of age are
twice as likely to die during pregnancy or childbirth compared to older women. (Meade &
Ickovics, 2005). Adolescents in some countries receive unsafe abortions. Teen pregnancy also
contributes to low birth weights. Infants born to teen mothers have a higher mortality rate. These
are a few of the reasons we need policy makers to push for early education of contraceptives, this
according to (County health ratings, 2017-a).
Summary of How the Proposed Policy will Address the SDOH in My Community
My SDOH Access to Healthcare Service. My goal is to see the pregnancy rate in 16-
year-old teens in lee county drop at least 10% in 6 months. I believe this is measurable through
the Lee County Health Department. This can be achievable if early intervention is done. This is a
relevant goal as it affects the community with many unwanted pregnancies. The time frame for
my smart goal would be 6 months with assessment check at 3 months
, Proposal of Persuasive Course of Action for Policy Makers
The proposed persuasive course of action would be to show statistics of the growing
group of teen pregnancies. I would encourage policy makers to investigate this problem and plan
of action to make the contraceptives available to all women. The goal would be to see a 10
percent decrease in 6 months having all the stakeholders involved would make this possible.
Social Determinant of Health (SDOH) in My Community
Social Determinant of Health in my community, Access to Healthcare Services.
Teenage pregnancy is one crisis, the use of contraceptives to decrease the cases has
not worked. Early education on the risk of pregnancy without contraceptives needs to be
addressed. (County Health ratings, 2017-a). Teenage pregnancy has a high mortality and
morbidity. Teenage girls 15 to 19 years of age are twice as likely to die during pregnancy or
childbirth compared to older women. (Meade & Ickovics, 2005). Adolescents in some
countries receive unsafe abortions. Teen pregnancy also contributes to low birth weights. Infants
born to teen mothers have a higher mortality rate.
Data to Support the SDOH
The data implies that teen pregnancy is not as high as they were in previous years but is
still a crisis. Most teenage mothers are unlikely to complete their high school diploma. Only
1.5% of the total teenage mothers complete their college degree, only if they have supportive
family and friends. There are many issues related to teenage pregnancy, teen mothers suffer from
polysubstance abuse. There are many health and social consequences of teenage pregnancy. They
fear rejection from their parent’s and ignored by their friends. Some may feel envious of their
friends as they reach their individual goals in life. It may be difficult for a teenage mother to let
go of their carefree life and take responsibility as a parent. Teen-age mothers may feel insecure
