Schools as Communities of Care-D168
A. I chose scenario 1 that is about Anthony. One issue Anthony is facing is a physical need
by his lack of food. He rarely has a meal every evening at home and often steals other students’
food because he is starving. Another issue is how Anthony almost immediately loses interest in
class work and then distracts the other students from their work by stretching and kicking.
B1. I could address the issue of Anthony’s lack of food by making sure Anthony always has
food to take home with him. For example, schools in my home town have free food pantries
inside of the schools to supply poverty students with free feeding necessities. I could start (if the
school doesn’t already have one) or utilize the school’s free food pantry for children that is
always supplied with free food, snacks, and drinks for children who need it. Each week, I could
send him home on Mondays with enough food to last the entire week. I could address the
attention and distracting other students issue by using treats as an incentive. I would tell Anthony
if he can sit still during the entire circle time and not disrupt other students by stretching or
kicking them, that he can have a small candy bar or piece of candy as a prize. I could also
address the not sitting still issue by taking Anthony for a short walk when he feels fidgety, then
coming back to sit down and try to refocus.
B2. One relevant legal obligation I would have to do is contact Child Protective Services
about the lack of food, poor body odor, and continuously dirty clothing Anthony deals with
because being a school teacher makes me a mandated reporter. A privacy concern I must think
