Southern New Hampshire University
To be an effective leader, one must know their strengths and weaknesses in order to
support and help others at just about anywhere. Two highly motivated individuals, Paul Costa
and Robert McCrae, developed an assessment called the Big Five to help others assess where
they lie in regard to being an effective leader. The assessment explains the main five major traits
such as openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. I decided to
take the assessment for myself and was sort of surprised to see my results. Being that it assessed
me for being curious, original, intellectual, and creative, I scored moderately high in the
openness trait. I scored high on the conscientiousness trait for being organized, dependable, and
having an achievement-oriented trait. For extraversion I scored high for being assessed as
outgoing, sociable, and talkative while I scored moderately low in neuroticism for being anxious,
temperamental, moody, and irritable. The fifth and final trait, agreeableness, I scored moderately
high for being assessed as affable, tolerant, sensitive, trusting, and kind. I really do think that
these elements can really help me as a leader because it allows me to understand myself in a
different point of view. People don’t really step back and think about how their subordinates
view them because of the power or authority that they hold, and this allows leaders to reflect on
themselves in order to determine which field they need to improve on in order to be better
leaders or people.
One thing that I did notice that took me by surprise was that it assessed me to be fairly
creative under the openness trait. I myself, do not believe this to be true because I am far from it.
I have a hard time being creative and trying to implement new ideas in a different manner.
Another element that made me sit and ponder for a while was that I was temperamental and
moody under the neuroticism trait. The reason being is that I do understand I can be irritable and
