Being able to control your own body, is a right every woman should have and shouldn’t
be taken away by law. Depending on where you live in the United States, a women’s right to
choose what happens to their bodies have changed tremendously in the past few years. Every
woman should get to choose if they want to have children, use birth control or get an abortion.
Roe Vs Wade of 1973 was a decision lead by the supreme court, which changed woman’s
reproductive rights. This decision gave woman the right to end pregnancy with abortion, safe
and legally. Before that decision women sought out illegal and unsafe abortion methods which
caused long term health issues and one-sixth of all pregnancy related deaths (Parenthood).
This year alone, American lawmakers are rolling back women’s rights to have access to
affordable contraceptives and safe abortions. The science community is making contraceptives
more reliable and long lasting. Being able to have an IUD placed and not have to worry about
taking a daily pill, will drastically help prevent unwanted pregnancies. A lot of women forget to
take their birth control pill, then end up with an unwanted pregnancy, while not being allowed to
have an abortion. Even though after the child is born it will end up in the adoption circuit.
Science has been working on and have successfully made different types of contraceptive devices
that would drastically reduce the amount of unwanted pregnancies. All women should have the
right to choose what happens to their bodies. But, with out having access to proper health care,
, and education. They are being punished by not being able to decide what happens with their
bodies.
Women’s reproductive rights have changed in the United States. Several states have
already started the ban against, Roe vs. Wade including my home state, Ohio. According to
Planned Parenthood, 73% of American don’t want to see it overturned. When it comes to
woman’s reproductive rights, “women of color fare worse than white women in every aspect of
reproductive health” (Addressing). The ACA, Affordable Care Act and contraceptive coverage
has increased its access to preventative woman’s health services and methods of contraception.
This change is significant for lower income woman who can’t afford contraception or regular
health checks. The average cost of a year supply of contraceptive for a women making minimum
wage is equal to 51 hours of work (Institute).
Educating woman and children on reproductive health and taking care of their bodies is
the number one preventative. Uneducated girls have a higher chance of becoming child brides
and being trafficking victims. They can also have children at a young age and end up in poverty
(Walker). Women who are in power, or well educated women will be more likely to care for
themselves and educate themselves. They almost always have access to good health care,
insurance. These women can be role models for the younger generations and help influence them
into bettering themselves. All industries, are striving to have women leaders, this includes
entertainment, business’s, athletes, and the most powering to me this past year is politics. This
movement is focusing on women having equal and fair rights. This movement is also making
sure women’s rights are the same through out color, race, sexual orientation.
Through out History women’s rights have always been restricted, even to this day. When
you think about where the United States started with women’s abortion laws to today, some
