Critical Analysis Essay
Southern New Hampshire University
ENG-122-Q4077
This essay will analyze “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan. The quote, “don’t judge a book by
its cover, or someone’s intelligence by her English” (Tan, 2006), accompanies the byline of the
author’s article. Tan infers that nobody should judge another based upon their limited language
skills or lack thereof as intelligence is not measurable based on a person’s understanding of a
foreign language.
In “Mother Tongue,” Tan uses her own experience as a young Asian American female
growing up in a household with a Chinese mother who had difficulties fully grasping the English
language as her backdrop. She takes the audience on an exciting journey of retrospection that
allows for those reading to understand her choice to embrace the many different versions of

should be judged based upon their language skills and that intelligence is not synonymous with
how well one can grasp a foreign language. A feat that this writer feels that Tan argued well. We
see that she includes her mother’s day-to-day tasks that showcased her abysmal understanding of
the English language, as well as her (Tan’s) misguided feelings of shame that resulted from her
mother’s less than perfect English. Tan even includes the many instances of discrimination that
her mother had faced. The audience sees that she intends to impress upon them the importance of
not judging a book by its cover and the fallacy in ascribing low intelligence to one incapable of
perfectly understanding a foreign language.
As a reader, this writer was disappointed in the author’s apparent internalized racism. Tan
reveals how she was ashamed of her mother’s English, given her firsthand experiences of her
