Week 4 Assignment: The Adolescent Brain - Workshop Handout
Many times we hear parents say “I just don’t know what changed ! he/she is just
doesn’t listen anymore !” , Unfortunately this is a very natural and normal part of our
development into becoming the humans we were destined to be. Adolescent years are the
most vital years for any growing child, it is in these years that the relationship between the
parents and the child goes through a tricky transitional phase. Not only is it tough on the
parents it is also hard for the parents as it is in these years that base of a resilient, independent
and developed adult is being formed. Changes of the brain before and shortly after puberty
lead to behavioral problems (Arain et al., 2013). Sadly. Due to these changes in the brain
these years are the years that the child unconsciously develops the urge to separate
themselves from their parents but also still have the prepubescent need to have them around
depending on the mood and uncertain situations. In the article “They Like Me, They Like Me
Not” (McElhaney, Antonishak, & Allen, 2008) , McElhaney et al. state “ we expected that
adolescents who perceived themselves to be accepted would be socially well adjusted
(decreasing hostility, increasing desirability as a companion, decreasing withdrawal, and
decreasing advice seeking), regardless of their actual sociometric status. However, those who
lacked acceptance both in terms of self-perceived acceptance and preference-based
sociometric popularity were expected to have the most difficulties over time.” This goes to
show that this “rebellious” stage in their lives is when they set the foundation for their future.
, The Adolescent Brain 2
According to the Lifespan book the teen feel. very strong passionate emotions but their brain
doesn’t understand yet how to fully process and control it (pg. 344). For that very reason, it
would be better if we understood the development of the adolescent years in a more scientific
and logical way. For that would be best to understand the functioning of the brain during
those years, so that we may be better equipped to help develop amazing humans. The image
below shows the average teenage brain and upon analyzing this. Image we can. Begin to
understand why teenagers rebel against what they are being told to do it’s usually not in their
interest or just not. Something they feel is important.
Prefrontal Cortex - reasoning, impulse control, rational decision making
Amygdala - emotion, impulse, “fight or flight” instinct and aggression
