Week 2 Nonverbal Communication Analysis

Chamberlain University

Image # 1

What nonverbal messages are being sent in this image?

In this image, a lot of non-verbal behavior is apparent. Non-verbal communication can be de-

scribed as “ all the messages other than words that are used in communication. In oral communi-

cation, these symbolic messages are transferred by means of intonation, tone of voice, vocally

produced noises, body posture, body gestures, facial expressions or pauses.” (Besson et al 1970.)

The man standing appears to be in a position of power. He is authoritative and slightly aggres-

sive by standing, in contrast to the others in the image who are sitting. He is literally looking

down upon them, and talking down to them. This does not come across as though he is speaking

to an equal. His facial expressions look stern and serious. He looks unpleased. It appear as

though he is unhappy with the other people in this photo. When it comes to the female in the

photo, she looks displeased; perhaps she is annoyed or insulted.

What type of nonverbal communication codes are being used to deliver the message(s)?

One of the nonverbal forms of communication displayed is the use of kinesics. The man stand-

ing is using his posture and outstretched arm to convey his message. These types of body move-

ments can complement, repeat, regulate or even replace the verbal message given. (McLean,

2018.) The manner of his outstretched arms portrays the intensity of the emotions involved in the

message.

What effect does each message have on the other people in the image?

, We can infer that the male that we cannot see is facing the speaker and listening to the message.

The female looks a tad distressed. She is making eye contract with the speaker. Her body lan-

guage portrays a bit of confidence and alertness; she does not appear to be cowering or slouch-

ing. Her body is angled towards the speaker to receive the message.

What nonverbal communication skills and strategies could be used to communicate effec-

tively in this situation?

The man standing should be seated and level with the recipients of this message if he wants to

treat them as equals. It will result in the message coming off as less aggressive. His hand gestures

come be a bit more welcoming to appear less angry.

What nonverbal messages are being sent in this image?

The prominent woman in the front of the photo seems to be left out of the discussion. Is she not

paying attention because she is not included, or is she not included because she is not paying at-

tention? We cannot be sure. The two women behind her appear to be excluding her. They are

fac- ing each other, and she is facing away. The woman in the front looks displeased, while the

two behind her seem to be enjoying themselves. Their body languages is aimed tightly at each

other, reinforcing their close-knit conversation.

What type of nonverbal communication codes are being used to deliver the message(s)?

We can observe proxemics at play, which our text defines as “the study of the human use of

space and distance in communication.” (McLean, 2018.) The two women behind the computer
