There are a lot of fad diets or weight loss programs that exist, but one that has sparked the

nation with its results is the ketogenic diet or “keto”. “According to the research lead by Ali

Webster, Ph.D., R.D., a registered dietician and the director of research and nutrition

communications at IFIC, one of the most followed eating plan is Ketogenic or high fat” (Walsh,

2020). There are different types of keto diets: standard, cyclical, targeted, and high protein keto.

The one we will focus on is the standard keto diet. The standard keto diet is low carb and high

fat.

“The nutritional value of the ketogenic diet forces the body into using different types of

fuel. Instead of relying on sugar (glucose) that comes from carbohydrates (such as grains,

legumes, vegetables, and fruits), the keto diet relies on ketone bodies, a type of fuel that the liver

produces from stored fat” (Harvard Health Publishing, 2020). The standard keto diet focuses on

obtaining nutritional value from foods that are high in fats such as avocado, bacon and cheese.

Although these foods are high in fat, they are healthy fats. The benefit of the body using fat as

its primary source is that it can lower blood and insulin levels that are in carbohydrates. The

body in essence will metabolize the fat instead of the carbs.

One of the strengths of the ketogenic diet is that it aids in weight loss. “Ketogenic diets

consists of foods that fill a person up and may reduce hunger–stimulating hormones” (Kubala,

2020). The hunger-stimulating hormone, ghrelin increases the appetite while leptin decreases

the appetite. Leptin is made by fat cells so when the body is fed foods that have leptin such as

healthy oils, it suppresses the hunger hormone. The weakness of the diet is that it can be risk for
