Introduction

Jean Watson is an important figure in nursing since she developed the theory of human

caring. The theory focuses on the caring aspect that is the central focus in nursing. Nurses should

provide care to patients so that their overall welling can be improved. The nurse should have

qualities like the ability to respect, show compassion, form healthy relationships, and make

informed decisions concerning patients who will be caring for them. This paper focuses on the

five patterns of knowledge, human caring theory, Watson's views on the patterns of knowledge,

patterns that are easier to use from the theory, and application of the theory in nursing.

Five patterns of knowledge in nursing practice.

Professional define themselves by the knowledge they possess and the one they seek to

acquire. The five patterns of knowledge in nursing include personal knowledge, ethics,

aesthetics, empirical, socio-political. Personal knowledge is the knowledge that people have of

themselves acquired through experiences and what people have seen. In the nursing field,

personal knowledge is acquired when one is studying and attending to patients. For instance,

learning about nursing theories and how they can be applied enables one to know what to do to

provide quality care to patients. There is ethical knowing which is concerned about what is right

or wrong. For nurses, ethics are their obligation to respect and protect human life as they offer

care to patients in different settings. The other pattern of knowledge is aesthetic, knowing where

nursing is deemed to be an art. A new way of understanding a phenomenon is created through

aesthetic knowing. Uncovering something new is what aesthetic knowing is all about. Empirical

, knowing comes from research and observation of facts mainly through theories and is also called

the science of nursing (Brugger, 2015). In nursing, there is the application of nursing theories in

everyday practice, for instance, caring for patients and being compassionate using Jean Watson's

theory of human caring. The last knowing pattern is the socio-political pattern of the

sociopolitical environment (nurse and patient) and the nursing practice. Nurses are supposed to

look at the sociopolitical problems that affect patients and advocate for policies that seek to

address the problems like poverty and isolation (Khuan, 2006).

Main points of Jean Watson's theory of human caring

Jean Watson's theory of human caring focuses on how nurses care for patients and

emphasize the humanistic aspects of the nursing field in intertwining with scientific knowledge.

Nursing as a practice promotes health, averts sickness, extends care to patients, and restores

health to the ill. Treatment of diseases and promotion of health is what the theory is concerned

about. Watson emphasized caring as the core aspect of health promotion. Nurses are responsible

for creating an environment where people feel cared for, as this the central theme in nursing.

Additionally, Watson included the meta paradigms in nursing including, human beings, health,

and nursing. She argues that human beings should be respected and cared for by understanding

and assisting them. Jean Watson defined health as the entire functioning of a human being

characterized by the absence of diseases. To her, nursing is concerned with ensuring that people

gain back their health by promoting it. She saw it as a science (Gonzalo, 2021).

Moreover, there are the ten carative factors that are the core of caring proposed by

Watson for nurses to undertake. Carative factors of Watson improve the caring experience that

patients get to undergo in the care of nurses. Nevertheless, the curative factors are employed in

the nurse-patient interactions so that patients' experiences as they are cared for are enhanced.

They consist of focusing on love, kindness towards oneself and others for the foundation of

Carita's realization. There is being present as a nurse to a patient to increase interaction and

caring process. Moreover, there is also the sustenance of hope, faith, and a deep belief system to
