AC3.3 Justify a campaign for change

● I chose to focus on hate crime because it is a common serious crime that is vastly under
reported. Hate crime is largely under reported for a number of reasons such as victims
being fearful of consequences for themselves or their family if they report the crime to
the police, this may result in them being threatened.
● With my campaign I aim to highlight awareness about hate crime; helping the victims
with support and advice and highlight the dangers of hate crime and what someone can
do to stop the abuse. Furthermore I aim to educate the public and encourage victims to
report the crime.
● To achieve these aims I have created four key objectives which are: To set up social
media accounts where victims can find support networks; Set up an event/workshop to
help inform the public about the dangers of hate crime; creating posters/leaflets which
give a strong message and what website to look at and what number to call; and finally
to create t-shirts and wristbands to help raise money for a hate crime charity eg Stop
Hate UK.
● This is an important area of crime to address because police recorded crime figures
show in 2018/19 that there were 103,379 offences recorded by the police where one or
more of the central monitored hate crime strands were deemed to be a motivating factor.
This was 10% higher than in 2017/18.
● My campaign is specifically targeting young people aged 13-25 in high school, college
and university. I am targeting people in schools as this is the category of people were
hate crime is most common. I also want to specifically target young people because by
educating them on hate crime, it can make people aware of the signs that someone is a
victim of this crime. This would also be a good thing as it could make a person seek
help, advise or support if they are going through this.
● I decided to name my hate crime campaign: The Silence Hides Violence Campaign. I
chose this because it has rhyming words in it which makes it catchy and memorable.
What’s more is that it meets my aim of raising awareness and educating/informing the
public.
● I chose to use a range of methods including social media, posters, merchandise and
events/workshops. I chose these methods because they will particularly appeal to my
target audience. Posters are a useful method for my campaign as they are easy to put
up around high schools, colleges and universities. Furthermore, they will be seen by the
age range (13-25) in which i’m targeting. Social media is also a useful method as it is
widely used by my demographic on a day to day basis. It is also easy categorize ideas
together through different social media platforms by using hashtags which is why I am
using the hashtag #silencehidesviolence throughout my hate crime campaign. Ideas are
easily shared through social media which will raise awareness for my campaign.
Merchandise is a useful method because they can be worn and seen by a wide range of
people. This can also generate a small amount of money which will go towards the
campaign - which can be further used to produce more products. As part of my
campaign I also created two hate crime posters outlining the importance of love and
acceptance instead of hate. My posters also include a telephone number and a website
