UNV-503: Introduction to Graduate Studies in Liberal Arts
The objective of the study conducted by Nagel, Blignaut, and Cronje was to display the
success of online students versus those attending college traditionally in person. Some of the key
items they mentioned that correlated to success in the class was the student’s participation,
number of times logged into the course, and contribution to discussions. The main questions
presented in the study were “How did online participation relate to learning and successful
course completion?” and “How did participation influence the learning community?” (p.38).
Participation was tracked using learning management system (LMS). This revealed when
students were logging in and not participating as well as those who did not log in at all. (Cronje
et al.,2009). Cronje, Blignaut and Nagel (2009) also mentioned multiple types of participants
such as legitimate nonparticipation, inadvertent nonparticipation, and facilitator participation.
Some complications with the study were the differences in ages of participants and
student visibility. It was stated by Nagel, Blignaut and Cronje that the cohort of participants
ranged from a Baby Boomers to Generation X. Lasty, another obstacle mentioned was the
student’s visibility. This visibility was in reference to the participants lack availability or access
to the internet as well as lacking familiarity with the technology due to their culture or
environment (Cronje et al,2009).
