Assignment 06: Greenie
Tell us what your original answer to the question above was AND why;
My original answer to the first assignment was option E. We must save the rhino
because it is the right thing to do. The rhinos are a significant part of our heritage,
especially in South Africa. One of Africa's declared 'Big Five', which we see on our R10
notes, is officially on the verge of becoming extinct. Still, poachers have been killing
more each year to acquire the illegal rhino horn. I feel so frustrated and sad for the
rhinos who are brutally killed unnecessarily. Rhinos can live without a horn, so why not
only take the horn if you really have to? These rhinos won't be around for much longer if
this is the trend we are moving at. As human beings, we should know what is right from
wrong, and killing an animal for your greed and materialistic selfishness is wrong. I
honestly do not understand how someone can turn their back on someone or something
suffering in pain…
It's the same as asking the question: Your cat brings you a bird (still alive), the bird is
scared, and his wing is hurt. What should you do? Throw the bird away in a trash can
even though he's still alive? Or would you take the bird outside and put him at a safe
place where he would still have a chance. Isn't that the natural instinct we would
immediately think to do? Yes, because we have our subconscious telling us right from
wrong.
Saving the majestic rhino is the right thing to do.
2. Tell us what your current answer is AND why;
I still stand with my previous answer, E. We must save the rhino because it is the
right thing to do. We as human beings often have an anthropocentric view regarding
rhinos, not only rhinos but our view of nature itself. Our consumer-driven humanity is
having a significant impact on nature as a whole. "Money makes the world go around,"
they always say. So nobody is thinking about what really matters when looking at the
circle of life. One can't flourish without the other. Would there even be money without
trees? Would there be aquariums and safaris without animals? What would we eat if
nothing was able to grow or all of the wildlife has become extinct? So the basis of all
humans is nature.
Nature has intrinsic value; I believe even more valuable than humans. The only way to
properly save the rhinos is only possible when we change our perspective and treat
them with love and respect. We abuse our rhinos because we think of them as
instrumental value in an anthropocentric way.
How would you imagine a dark world, no trees and grass, the air thick in gasses, and no
animals roaming the lands? Would that make you happy? No, I hope not. But this is
what we will leave behind if humankind does not change its perspective of our nature's
intrinsic value. We should start making a mind shift to a non-anthropocentric view.
